Shaking the blues

One of my professional hats I wear is that of a health coach focuses on wellness in a holistic manner, meaning looking at the whole person, which includes what we put in our mouths. I know how overwhelming it is to know about what is “healthy” to put in your mouth as I have learned over 100 dietary theories and my biggest takeaway is that we are all different. By being more intent on how our bodies react to food we can be more proactive.

Even though, most of my clients come to me for support in releasing stress they come with symptoms such as these found below. As a coach, a wellness detective, my goal is assist them in identifying the root causes to them.

headaches nausea dizziness
hearing loss tinnitus insomnia
blurred vision eye problems hallucinations
memory loss slurred speech mild to suicidal depression
personality changes violent episodes mood changes
anxiety attacks hyperactivity heart arrhythmia
edema or swelling gastrointestinal disorders seizures
skin lesions muscle cramps joint pains
fatigue PMS menstrual irregularities
chest pain increased appetite numbness and tingling of extremities

Have you been experiencing these symptoms lately?

Most of the time though food is a huge culprit in causing the symptoms stated above or rather certain ingredients in food.

As they say, you are what you eat. So what are you eating on a daily basis?
If you have been feeling any of these symptoms recently, one such culprit could be the impact of Valentine’s Day which just ended last week and for many that meant loads of sugar laden items being popped continuously into our mouths.

I admit that I took advantage of chocolate specials at the stores and helping my nephew (unknown to him) reduce his valentine candy stockpile. So, recently when I began to notice that I was feeling sluggish, experienced difficulty in focusing, annoyed with people or a lack of motivation I became my own health coach and took stock of what I was eating.

Now, in order to get back on track with my life and help my body feel better I’m in the process of detoxing my whole life, nutrition included as I take responsibility for my life. The concept of The whole detox*, by Dr. Deanna Minich one of my mentors, is that in order to maintain balance and health we have to look at all aspects of our lives. (More info coming soon)

As I mentioned I took stock of what I was eating and realized that my sugar intake had increased tremendously. I want to share with you the truth about sugar so you can also make an informed decision if that’s what’s causing your health issues. Let’s begin with one of the most toxic and easily found products in our world today, sucrose products (table sugar) and artificial sweeteners (sugar substitutes) so you can make the best qualified decision of what sweets you will continue to allow into your life and into the mouths of your loved ones.

Did you know that artificial sweeteners are regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, (FDA)?

In 1958, the Food Additives Amendment to the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act required the FDA to approve food additives, including artificial sweeteners, before they can be made available for sale in the United States. However, keep in mind that while it is approved it does not mean it is safe for long term use.

There are five major categories of artificial sweeteners that are approved by the FDA:

1.  Aspartame, sold under the brand names NutraSweet® and Equal®
2.  Saccharin, sold under the brand name Sweet’N Low®
3.  Sucralose, sold under the brand name Splenda®
4.  Acesulfame K (or acesulfame potassium), produced by Hoechst, a German chemical company; widely used in foods, beverages, and pharmaceutical products around the world
5.  Neotame, produced by the NutraSweet Company; the most recent addition to FDA’s list of approved artificial sweeteners, neotame is used in diet soft drinks and low-calorie foods

The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) cautions everyone to avoid aspartame, saccharin, and acesulfame K because they are unsafe when consumed in large amounts or are very poorly tested and not worth the risk. The CSPI lists neotame and sucralose as safe.

Aspartame is of particular concern because it contains phenylalanine (50%), aspartic acid (40%), and methanol (10%), three well-recognized neurotoxins. Fortunately, most of the the symptoms I stated above are alleviated once aspartame use is discontinued.

Stevia-based sweeteners in the form of Truvia and PureVia have been rapidly replacing aspartame sweetened products. However, due to health concerns cited in literature the FDA has not approved the use of whole-leaf Stevia or crude Stevia extracts as food additives. On the other hand, a “no objection” approval on the GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) list of additives was given to its extracts known as Truvia, a sweet-tasting compound found in products like Coca-Cola and Cargill and PureVia, typically found in PepsiCo products. Although Stevia has not retained an official “approval” it is allowed to be marketed and sold as a dietary supplement.

My rule of thumb is if I can’t pronounce it, I don’t eat it or wear it on my skin

In conclusion, artificial sweeteners are that, artificial. When you place artificial items into your body then it can cause issues because your body is not used to it. Review the symptoms found in the beginning of the article and take a look at what foods you are ingesting. If you notice that you are putting more artificial items, especially ones you can’t pronounce, then replace it with more natural options like local honey or coconut sugar.  Take responsibility of your health by asking yourself why you are feeling the way you do. God, thank you for your love

Allow me to be clear, I’m not writing about God in religion but about God in all of us. God is an energy from which we are connected to at all times and created us in love and peace. We then choose based on various factors to not embrace it as we judge others who are different from us. We forget that we are all one as we were all born the same way and transition as well.
A little about my religious background just for clarification. I was raised Catholic and graduated from a Catholic high school. However, once I left school, I left the religion and my faith. I had too many questions unanswered and it just wasn’t working for me. My faith and dedication to it began to decrease until I rarely thought about God, much less pray or ask for help.
However, God returned to my life when my sister was diagnosed with cancer in 2009. Later that year I began to attend a non-denominal church to receive community support and remind me about faith. She chose natural therapies for her treatment, many which I had no idea what they entailed yet I was curious. During this time I learned a natural therapy called Reiki which brought back my spiritual belief. Reiki is a Japanese stress reduction technique using energy to help relax the body and enhance healing. It means spirit and earth energetic connection.

I had hoped that my faith and Reiki practice would heal her yet it was not to be, at least not in the way I imagined it to be. She eventually began to transition in May 2010 and chose to do hospice in our parents’ condo in Key Biscayne. I returned home to stay with her and my parents during this time. I remember an event a few nights before she physically died when I was alone with her in our shared room. I was reading to her from a book she requested before dozing off from the effects of her medication a hospice nurse had just given her.  Suddenly she began to talk. Shocked I glanced up and saw that had such a beautiful smile on her face. Looking straight ahead she said they were coming for her. Despite my pleading she wouldn’t elaborate. I then felt a calmness wash over me and I stopped talking. A whisper told me it was okay they were angels.

I then placed my hands on her and began to offer her Reiki, setting the intention for peace and calm. I asked God for support for my family, especially Yoli as she transitioned to another place. I give thanks to my faith and Reiki practice as it allowed me to be open and willing to understand her journey.

Faith is a knowing without proof which also provides hope. The sense that God is always with me and all I have to do is ask for support is so comforting. I was again emotionally tested when my mother was also diagnosed with cancer and transitioned 4 years later. It’s now been almost 2 years since she joined my sister yet I sense her often. Feb 9 she would have celebrated 73 years. The day of her birthday I honored her at my weekly chakra meditation which was so beautiful, plus it was right before the full moon.

Losing them has reminded me to embrace my life every day and the opportunities I have experienced. I set my intention to live engaged and joyful as I create my reality. All that I do in my current life, especially my business has evolved from my those who have transitioned and my faith in God.

I also believe that they are constantly by my side and sending me supportive messages as I push forward. God has reminded me that by being grateful I am supported and offered abundance in various aspects.

May all beings be happy and free

Thank you for taking a few moments to read my writing. With so many other distractions and people vying for your attention, you have chosen to read my thoughts and that truly inspires me.
Today I want to share with you a beautiful mantra that offers me inspiration during challenging times (seems to be happening with more frequency lately). Regardless of what side of the political field you are on or where you stand on public issues, the point to remember is that ultimately we are all human beings. Although I do question some people at times in regards to their humanness.
You are probably feeling even more tense lately because you feel the negative energy from others which causes us to feel more stress as we are weighed down by this invisible field. As an energy healer I’ve become even more sensitive around others. Also as a compassionate human being my stress levels rise when I feel annoyed with a situation that is causing harm to others in any way. When I take stock of my rising anger I take a moment to stop and breath.
In the past I would have been on the streets yelling as loud as anyone as I was a very active political organizer in my 20s. Now, I fight the battles from behind my computer sending emails, calling politicians, or sending a little money when able. I also have another tool I use which is sending compassion and love to the world. I combine this intention with Reiki and visualize it spreading all over the world.
A story comes to mind about a man who was on the shore looking at numerous starfishes that washed upon the shore. Then he picked one up at a time and threw it into the ocean. He continued on for a long time.

Someone passed by him and asked why he was doing that and the man answered, because it matters to this one.

Who do you relate to in the story, the man who threw the starfish or the person walking by and questioning?

Regardless of who you resonate with, what matters is that we each have our own ability to take action in the way that best works for us to help someone or something. One example could be taking a deep breath and pushing away negative thoughts which can be more harmful to you and those around you.
As I mentioned earlier, the point of this writing is to share with you a mantra. The mantra is in sanskrit, Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu, which in English means “may all beings everywhere be happy and free, and may the thoughts, words, and actions of my own life contribute in some way to that happiness and to that freedom for all”
It’s a beautiful reminder and blessing to share with others. I found this beautiful rendition of the mantra you can listen to by clicking here. Repeating the mantra Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu helps you release the stress from everyday life and additional stressors caused by changes in our political system. Plus it feels good to your throat as you chant the words which cause a healing wave within your body due to its vibration.
You may not be able to change the world how you want to yet you can change how you face it. So, join me in expressing happiness and freedom to ourselves and others.

What’s your favorite mantra or phrase that helps you to release stress?

Feel free to reply to these writings as I’d love to hear from you.

Making Time To Meditate

Every time I meet someone new and tell that person what I do for a living, offer stress release for self-care, normally the topic of meditation comes up. Without fail each person states that he/she has read the importance of meditation but doesn’t do enough of it.
I then ask, what does meditation mean to you? Most reply sitting in a certain way, group meditations, listening to a guided meditation, etc. Yes, these are all types of meditation but it’s not what defines meditation.
Meditation is the act of being present, mindful within whatever you are doing by focusing on just one thing which can take endless amounts of forms and it allows your body and mind to relax.
It’s so easy to complicate a simple act, such as meditation which in essence is really about you finding excuses so you don’t practice it. I bet each of you practice meditation in some capacity yet haven’t been aware of it.
For example, do you like to sit outside and just watch the clouds pass by? Or practice yoga, tai chi, dance or other forms of gentle movement? Perhaps, when you can’t sleep you count sheep or count? Or pray, repeat a mantra? Listen to instrumental music and just become lost to the sound?
All of these are forms of meditation and finding the one (or ones) that works best for you is what is important.
I practice various forms of meditation because I know it’s not just one size fits all. Sometimes I like to simply stare outside my window as waves crash on the beach, listen to guided meditations, practice breathing techniques, apply self-Reiki, repeat mantras, listen to binaural beats, etc. I just choose the form that best fits me in the moment that will bring me peace and relaxation.
Recently I was watching the sunrise and felt inspired to record a meditation. In the past I would have ignored this as I would have thought no one would be interested (limiting belief) yet this time I took action. Now, I’m sharing it with you so you too can benefit from that glorious and peaceful moment.
This meditation is only 1 minute long yet it’s enough time for you to pause long enough for your body to release stress that it’s been holding on to and your mind to relax.
Take a moment right now to listen to this meditation, sit back, close your eyes, and feel the sound of my voice, the waves, and the energy flow throughout your body as it has been blessed with Reiki. Then give thanks to yourself for this relaxing moment and return to your daily life.
Before you go though please respond to this email as I would love to hear from you and your response to this meditation.
